Maintenance & Care

How often should I replace the cooler pads?

Back to All FAQs

Pad replacement frequency depends on the pad type, water quality, and usage patterns. Here's a comprehensive guide:

Aspen (wood shaving) pads:

  • Typical lifespan: 1 season, sometimes less
  • Replace if: Pads are compressed, discolored, have heavy mineral buildup, or produce musty odors
  • With hard water: May need mid-season replacement
  • Cost: $15-40 for a set

Rigid media (cellulose) pads:

  • Typical lifespan: 3-5 years with proper maintenance
  • Replace if: Pads are crumbling, have significant mineral deposits that won't clean off, or airflow is noticeably reduced
  • Cost: $50-150 for a set

Signs your pads need replacement:

1. Visible mineral buildup - White, crusty deposits that reduce water absorption 2. Sagging or deterioration - Pads no longer hold their shape 3. Reduced airflow - Less cool air output despite the system running normally 4. Musty or moldy odors - Even after cleaning 5. Uneven water distribution - Dry spots on the pads 6. Visible mold or algae - Green or black growth 7. Poor cooling performance - The cooler doesn't cool as well as it used to

Extending pad life:

  • Drain and refill water weekly to reduce mineral concentration
  • Use a bleed-off valve to continuously flush minerals
  • Add cooler treatment tablets monthly
  • Run fan-only mode after cooling to dry pads
  • Clean pads mid-season with a garden hose (for rigid media)
  • Cover the cooler in winter to prevent debris accumulation

Quality pads provide better cooling efficiency. Don't try to stretch pad life beyond their effective lifespan—worn pads waste energy and reduce comfort.
