Spring Startup Guide

Get ready for the heat. Follow this 20-minute guide to ensure your cooler runs efficiently and smells fresh all summer.

1

Uncover & Inspect

Remove the winter canvas cover and the damper slide (the metal sheet blocking the duct). Check the belt for cracks and tension—it should deflect about 1/2 inch.

  • Spin the blower wheel by hand to ensure it moves freely and quietly.

2

Connect Water & Check Float

Reconnect the water supply line and turn on the valve. Watch the water fill the pan. The float valve should shut off the water when it reaches about 1/2 inch below the top of the overflow pipe.

leak check: Look for drips at the connection points as the pressure comes back on.

3

Clean Pads & Pump Test

If using aspen pads, replace them annually for best cooling. If using rigid media (MasterCool), wash them down. Turn on the pump (without the fan) and ensure water flows evenly to all pads.

4

Power Up

Plug the unit back in. Turn on the fan to varying speeds (Low/High) and listen for any odd vibrations. Ensure a window is cracked open in the house for airflow!

5

Manage Your Airflow (Critical!)

Evaporative coolers push air, they don't recirculate it. You MUST provide a path for the air to escape.

  • 1. Crack windows slightly: Open windows 2-3 inches in the rooms you want to cool.
  • 2. Direct the flow: Air will flow from the cooler vent towards the nearest open window. Control the path to cool specific rooms.
  • 3. Too much humidity? Open windows wider or turn on exhaust fans to push moist air out faster.
  • 4. Tissue Test: Hold a tissue against the window screen. The air pressure should be strong enough to hold it there gently.

Need a tune-up?

Don't sweat it. Local pros can replace pads, adjust belts, and optimize your airflow.
